I was excited (and surprised!) that so many of you were into my last book-related post, so I’ve got some new recent reads and recommendations for you. I wholeheartedly recommend each of these books. Let me tell you why!
1. Daring Greatly by Brene Brown
I’d heard oodles about this book from friends and fellow bloggers. Now that I’ve delved into it myself, I understand why. Daring Greatly speaks volumes about vulnerability and shame and how these two things ultimately control our lives, from the way we parent to the way we love. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from a book about vulnerability, or if it would be applicable to my life. Now I can say that I think it would be applicable to literally anyone who reads it. Brene Brown does an excellent job of sharing her research in ways that are easy to understand, fun to read, and deeply profound. There were many instances when I felt like she expressed things I knew, but never quite knew how to understand or verbalize. I think this book would be great for women or men — it’s definitely one of my new favorites!

2. A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki
I didn’t know anything about this book before reading it and picked it up at the recommendation of a friend. Ultimately, this novel is about a struggling author who finds the diary of a Japanese high school girl. The novel deals with many themes — suicide, bullying, honesty, courage, and family. It also works through our conceptions of time. Though, the reason I really loved this novel was because strewn throughout it were so many pieces of Japanese culture and language. It felt natural and wholly reminded me of my time living in Japan. If you’ve ever lived there or studied the language, you’ll love this book, though I think most people will find value in the story.

3. #GIRLBOSS by Sophia Amoruso
This was a quick read — it only took me a few short hours to finish it. The main message I gathered from #GIRLBOSS is that you need to work hard and do your own thing. Amoruso had some interesting stories to share about how she went from an unmotivated shoplifter to the CEO of Nasty Gal, a multi-million dollar clothing company. The story is unique and reads like a fictional tale and Sophia has some motivating words for entrepreneurs. I was definitely pumped to improve my business after reading this!

Have you read any of these? What did you think? Any books you recommend? I usually pick at least one book to read from all of your recommendations, so I’d love to hear of anything you were enchanted by! 🙂

I read Brene’s book The Gift of Imperfection a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it! Daring Greatly is on my list to read as well! Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Ohhh I need to read that other book! Can’t get enough of her now 🙂
I really want to read #GIRLBOSS! I’ve seen so many people recommend it and it sounds so inspiring and really helpful when in need of motivation. I love the quotes you have chosen for each of the books!

This reminds me that I need to add Daring Greatly to my summer reading list since I’ve heard so many good things about it! And I can’t wait to check out #GIRLBOSS too since I just discovered it a couple weeks ago. I love books and posts like these 🙂 xo, gina
They are both stellar books. You’ll love ’em! 🙂
#GIRLBOSS was amazing!! I already want to read it again!
I know right! Loved that one. 🙂
I just finished We Were Liars by E. Lockhart and it positively WRECKED ME. It’s also an extremely fast read (I finished it in an afternoon.)
Ohhh I should check it out! Wrecked you in a good way, right? haha
Haha, yes, it was a good kind of wrecking. Reminded me a lot of when I finished Gone Girl!
I’m a huge fan of Brene Brown’s books – she just has so much wisdom to offer! Have you read anything else by her?
Yeah, she seems like such an incredible woman! I haven’t read anything else by her, but would love to! Do you have any recommendations?
My favorite is ‘The Gifts of Imperfection’. I recommend it to absolutely everyone and it’s fairly short!
Adding it to my list as we speak! Thanks for the rec 🙂
I enjoyed reading A Tale for the Time Being by Ruth Ozeki and I especially loved the references to Buddhism. I’m glad you decided to do another of these posts, it’s like a little online book club, reading other people’s comments too 🙂

I’m glad you read that one! And how neat that you got something else out of it (Buddhism references), while I enjoyed it for the Japanese references. I feel like that book has a way of connecting to certain people in a meaningful way. Glad you liked it and these book posts! 🙂
Looks like everyone’s been reading #GIRLBOSS. I’m itching to pick up my own copy!!
Do it!! It’s a good one. 🙂
I haven’t read any of these, but I definitely want to read #GIRLBOSS soon and the novel by Ruth Ozeki sounds fantastic~ And that quote you shared is amazing. I read it a couple of times.
Let me know what you think of them! 🙂 And I’m obsessed with quotes — glad you liked that one!
As a lot of people on this thread, I have been hearing wonders and wonders about #GIRLBOSS! I am currently reading “I am Malala” (finally, after searching for ages in Okinawa), so this is my current read.
I am really looking forward to read “A Tale for the Time Being”. I have been eyeballing it for a while now!
xo!

I’ve never heard of that one, but I’ll need to check it out! Since you live in Okinawa, you’ll love A Tale for the Time Being! 🙂
I’ve been wanting to read #GIRLBOSS and now I’ll be sure to check it out. I just started “the Orenda” by Joseph Boyden and I just finished “The Smart One” but I don’t remember the author. It was such a good summer read about families and our strange but good dynamics with our siblings
Oh that sounds really interesting! I haven’t read many books about siblings — I’ll have to check that one out.
I’ve heard good and bad reviews on #GIRLBOSS. Although I heard it’s pretty basic and seems to flit between topics without much structure, I still think I’d like to give it a read – I might wait a bit to see if it goes on sale.
I’ve just started reading Blog Inc by Joy Cho – I’m about a quarter of the way through from a few train rides to and from work and I’m really enjoying it. I think I will pick up some of her others when I’m done!
I’m so glad you said that about #GIRLBOSS. You articulated pretty much exactly how I felt about it. Overall I did really enjoy it and it was a quick, interesting, and spunky read, but it definitely didn’t seem to have a lot of structure, which made it a little more difficult for me to decide exactly what I got out of it when I was finished. I’d still recommend it though! And I’ve thought about reading Blog Inc — I just might have to now that you’ve mentioned it!
