Love this yellow wall!

In college I coordinated a weekend photoshoot with a bunch of my friends. 30-40 people showed up and spent the day transforming into a model, photographer, stylist, or all of the above. We traded clothes in parking lots, brought household items as props, and roamed around the city snapping photos of each other. Most people had never modeled before and no one was a professional photographer — we were all amateurs in our own ways, but spending the day with so many creative friends who dared to step out of their comfort zones was so refreshing.

In that same vein, I thought it would be fun to start doing some style posts around these parts. Outfit posts will still, likely, be pretty minimal, but I did have an enormous amount of fun shooting these photos with my friend, Naadine! It’s amazing to make creative things, but it’s an entirely new sensation when you are the creative thing — when your body and clothes and expressions interact with your environment to create some sort of art. So, I’m probably not vying for a spot as the next fashion blogger, but if dancing in front of colorful walls makes me feel more alive, then you better believe I’m down. 🙂

Dance dance dance!

I’m cracking up in the last photo because there were people around while I was dancing. So.many.people. Or at least it felt that way! haha!

Cute skirt for spring!

Love this blue wall!!

Fixing my hair or flexing my muscles? You decide. 😉

Cute top for spring!

I don’t wear a lot of jewelry, but I’ve been wearing that ring with two hands embracing since I was in junior high. I tend to hold onto things that are meaningful for entirely too long. Also, yes, my shirt is missing a button. This is probably why I could never be a fashion blogger. 😉

Would you ever do an outfit post?

  1. you look fab! LOVE the colored walls. I need to find me some of those and a Naadine 🙂

  2. You look adorable, I love the skirt!

  3. You look great and I am actually in the midst of writing an outfit post and the shirt I have on for it has a spot so maybe we are creating a new trend 😉

  4. Amanda says:

    You look beautiful! x

  5. Cheri Armour says:

I love this! Absolutely love it!

  6. Ginny says:

Love this! And – you look just like Michelle Dockery!

  7. I love your outfit and I think this is a great post!

  8. Pamela Baker says:

    You look cute!!

  9. Looking fantastic! love the outfit!

  10. Beka Johnson says:

so cute! I’d totally do a fashion post but I’d be taking self-portraits, which I know is possible but can be awkward. =)

  11. Rachael says:

So cute! Now I want to know all about your tattoo!

  12. Why are you so cute?! I love these kinds of things. I can’t wait for more of this.

  13. Cece says:

I’ve done one official one and a few where I’ve highlighted an outfit. Very few!! It feels like too much work. Love your maxi! I’m so into those right now.

  14. esther julee says:

i would.. if i knew how to put together better outfits! 😀

  15. Dija Henry says:

Thanks for sharing a little bit of history with us! You look like you were having so much fun! I have done some outfit posts before but I don’t think it’s my thing unless I’m “feeling it” that day. I would so be the girl with the missing button too. Or the stained sweater (wearing right now) or the not cool hole in my jeans…lol! dija from theinspiredcafe.com

  16. Erika says:

Aww, you’re so cute, Melyssa! 🙂

  17. Erin O'Brien says:

How cute! I like it! So, I did one style post on my blog back in September and haven’t done a single one since. It just didn’t feel like what I wanted to get into at the time. I’m thinking about doing one a week or one a month though. I do love fashion, but don’t want it to be the focus.

  18. I love this outfit…I feel like it’s very “you”. 🙂

  19. Jamie Greene says:

This is so cute! It makes me think of my college years and how I should have been more proactive like you did, and got groups together to get our creative juices flowing. Oh well, no better time than the present! Maybe I’ll do it and make a post about it. 🙂

  20. Cara Howard says:

You are SO BEAUTIFUL and this is amazing. LOVE. <3

  21. Tracy O'Neill says:

You look great and most importantly you’re having fun!

  22. It looks like you’re having so much fun in these pictures! This outfit is cute and looks comfortable. 🙂

  23. Looks like you made a friend through blogger’s giving back! To cute!

  24. Michelle K. says:

Melyssa! I’m in love with these photos!! They’re so colorful, fresh and HAPPY! They just made my morning at the office that little bit brighter. I’d love to see more outfit posts from you in the future. It’s always fun to see more of the girl behind the blog 🙂 I’d definitely like to do outfit posts myself but I’m very insecure about my body. I’ll look in the mirror and love my outfit, then I’ll take some full-body photos and I’ll hate them, lol. One day, one day… xx

  25. Miriam says:

I can only repeat what everybody else is saying: these photos are darling, they are bright and happy and awesome! Do more outfit posts! Good for you for going somewhere where there are people around, I still can’t do that. I do mine in our back yard 🙂
And please, do a post about your tattoo, it looks amazing and I would love to find out the story behind it.

    • Thank you Miriam! You’re too sweet. I definitely don’t think I’d be able to do outfit photos with people around if my friend weren’t there! She told me that when she used to do them by herself, she’d carry her tripod around town and take photos on a timer. Ballsy! haha

  26. Love your outfit post! You are totally beautiful inside and out. I have been toying with doing some outfit posts. I need to have time in the day to do it tough. By the time I get home from work I am afraid I look too haggard, ain’t nobody wanna see that!

  27. Stacia says:

These are so much more fun than typical fashion blogger outfit posts.I feel like fashion bloggers fird a pose or two and all of their photos are variations on that. These photos are alive, which is so much more fun. When I do outfit posts it’s usually because I made or altered something that I’m wearing.

  28. AnneMarie says:

I really want to do a outfit blog post actually. I think eventually I’ll save up for a really nice camera so I can take some high quality pictures. Until then, I’m using my iPhone and probably will refrain from any outfit posts. Hahaha, I love the outftit though!

  29. josie c. says:

Cute outfit! Yeah, I have thought about doing outfit posts for a while, but haven’t gotten around to it. I really like making sets on Polyvore and posting them from time to time. I think it would be fun to add outfits to the mix.

  30. I think this is my absolute favorite outfit post I’ve ever seen, Melyssa–your personality just shines through!!!

  31. Love this! Now if only I had a person willing to take such amazing photos of me!haha. My boyfriend gets quite fed up after a while 😉

  32. Courtney says:

Hmm, this looked like a fun day. I’m still working up the nerve. Love your blog!

  33. I have been surfing online more than three hours today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours. It is pretty worth enough for me. In my view, if all site owners and bloggers made good content as you did, the web will be much more useful than ever before.
