Have you wondered what’s common among those breathtaking pictures on Pinterest and Instagram? While they all have a remarkable subject in the foreground, they also have an absolutely eye catching backdrop. A great backdrop highlights the subject and adds character to the photo. For many people, it also creates brand consistency, since it gives them a particular background to use over and over again.

5 Backdrop Ideas For Blog Photography Under $30 (And How to Create Them)

If you are looking for some awesome background ideas to make your photos stand out on Instagram, Pinterest or your blog, we have you covered today. And guess what? They’re all under $30!

Foam boards
5 Backdrop Ideas For Blog Photography Under $30 (And How to Create Them)

This is the easiest way to create a clean white background for your photos. The best part? You can pick these up for less than $5 at Michael’s or your local craft store. These are very light, so you can easily move them around based on where your light source is. You can also use these in different colors to spruce up your pictures. This set of 10 foam boards in different colors on amazon is a great deal!

Works great for: minimalistic or bright white photos.

Vintage and textured fabrics

5 Backdrop Ideas For Blog Photography Under $30 (And How to Create Them)

I love the airy feel and the lovely texture that fabrics add to photos. You can use old curtains, scarves, hand towels, muslin cloth, white sheets – you name it. Just lay down a piece of fabric, place your subject over it and click away.

Fabrics offer a lot of texture, color, and pattern to photos, which makes them pop. It also makes your photos more memorable and unique. You already have all these in your house, dig them out!

Works great for: rustic- or vintage-inspired photos and food photography.

Paper Goods

5 Backdrop Ideas For Blog Photography Under $30 (And How to Create Them)

I have seen so many pretty Instagram photos which use paper as a photo background. Check out some pretty wrapping paper at your local craft store or just print out some amazing digital patterns on your printer. Also, if you love color, then using big pieces of colorful paper (or following our colorful backdrop tutorial here!), will give you nice pops of color to add to your photos.

Pro tip: choose colors that match the branding of your website for fluid brand consistency. One of our favorite sites for colorful paper backgrounds is Color-aid, which offers TONS of color choices that will match your brand colors really well.

Works great for: designers, bloggers, and anyone who loves quirky/colorful backgrounds.

Distressed Wooden boards / Table Tops

5 Backdrop Ideas For Blog Photography Under $30 (And How to Create Them)

I first came across these while I was staring at food photos on Instagram. I love the rustic texture that wooden backgrounds add to photos. If you have a wooden table in your house, you can make complete use of that, too. But if not, don’t worry! You can find a distressed wood tutorial that I wrote right here. Creating a background like this will also certainly help you create a more consistent and memorable brand, since it’s not something that many other people do…you’ll stand out!

Works great for: food photography, beauty bloggers, and rustic-inspired photos.

Textured Vinyl backgrounds

5 Backdrop Ideas For Blog Photography Under $30 (And How to Create Them)

If you are not one for DIY and want an easy fix, you can purchase vinyl backdrops or contact paper. They are available in different colors and textures and provide you with a lot of choices, from wooden textures to marble! This Etsy shop specializes in making a variety of photography backgrounds that would look great with blog photography. You can also find a lot of options for contact paper (including marble — pretty!) on amazon here.

Works great for: just about anyone! You can find vinyl and contact paper backgrounds to suit just about any style.

What are your go-to backgrounds for blog photos? Will you be adding any of these to your blog photography arsenal?

And don’t forget to grab your free Instagram workbook below. 😉

  1. Great post! Can’t wait to try some of these out in my pics. Gemma x http://www.jacquardflower.uk

  2. Erika Gibson says:

My fave for my ceramics is drywall, actually. I got a really big piece and cut it down to 4’x2′, then scored it so it bends down the middle at 2’x2′. (I also put duct tape around the edges as the insides are a bit weird.) I also have a piece of 2’x2′ spruce, I believe, that works really well.

  3. All great ideas! I’ve been working on painting a wooden backdrop for my own photos!

I love using paper goods as my background. There are all kinds of color and pattern to choose from. You can also stick it up against the wall and drape it all the way down on the floor. This way you can create a clean background without the horizontal line. Just like how people do it in professional studio!

I love to use marbel backgrouds in my posts (because I have no other nice white clean space available haha). I will definitely try some of fabrics to add some colour!

    http://www.cojograab.com

  30. Rachel says:

Great ideas, but who has the room to store all of these backdrops?

    • Lindsay says:

I stack mine along-side my cutting boards and cookie pans! Works great because they kind of lean sideways in a lower kitchen cabinet.

    • Trudy Stone says:

Rachel I feel your pain! The hubster gives me the side eye every time I lug a new prop or backdrop into the house 😉 I use foam boards quite a bit which can easily just be tucked away in the side of my coat or clothes closet. I have a white one and a black one that I use. I also purchase small wooden boards from my local hardware store. I store them by using them to bookend the foam core boards from falling down in the closet. Good luck!

  31. Trudy Stone says:

Melyssa! You’ve done it again! Another great, informative post. I’ve always wanted to use textured patterns so may tackle that next. My go to for sure is foam boards. So light and easy to move around. They also double as great light reflectors

  32. Such great ideas! I use white foam boards a lot so I can have a nice, clean background and get some bright photos. I love the wood background! I need to get some cooler furniture to take pictures on. Most of our tabletops are black and it’s just so hard to get the same look on a black backdrop haha

  33. Torie says:

These ideas are great! I definitely need to pick up some foam board! I’ve been trying to give my Instagram pictures specifically a little more breathing room 🙂

    xx,
    Torie

  34. Crystal Richard says:

Absolutely love this. I recently built a DIY pallet coffee table and it makes an amazing backdrop for photos. I’m also obsessed with using my parents old wooden deck at their summer home for staging rustic, nautical photos in the summer. Distressed wood = golden.

I love the idea of the foam board! I’m all over this.

  35. Marianne says:

Gosh I feel so silly now for not seeing the obvious solutions like fabrics and paper! This was a really great post Chaitra, I’ve really been needing to my Instagram game and I have so many ideas now!

  36. Iida-Emilia says:

Thanks, this was a great post! I’ve been struggling with my photo backdrops, but now I realized that I have like dozens of colorfully printed clothes and they would make a beautiful backdrop!

  37. Zoe Joy says:

Thank you so mush! Something I’ve really needed help with, mostly for instagram. I think the textured fabrics is my favorite. Thanks again.

  38. Runnin Rocker says:

Love these ideas and the fact that they are all easy and accessible! Thanks for sharing! I usually use my granite countertop but it’s kind of busy. I also use just white paper but sometimes white just doesn’t cut it. I like using the rocks on the side of my pool but some things I don’t want to shoot outside. I like the distressed wood idea a lot!

  39. Sahra says:

I’m always on the hunt for cool and trendy wrapping papers to use as backdrops! I also use foam boards; they capture and throw light so well!!
