How To Stay Motivated When You Work From Home

Whether you’re self-employed or committing to a personal project, working for yourself can be super liberating. You can work at your own pace and exercise complete creative control. Working solo can give you the freedom to really go after your dreams, if you have the discipline and motivation to stay on track. If you decide to take an afternoon off and say, binge watch Mad Men on Netflix, no one will know, but your work will suffer. Staying motivated on personal or work projects is crucial for success. The more you can stay inspired, the more your blog/business/project will flourish. Here are some tips to get you motivated when you work for yourself:

Share goals and plans with friends

Without a boss breathing down your neck, it can be tempting to slack off. You won’t get told off or fired for taking a two-hour lunch-turned-shopping-spree. But in reality, the stakes are higher. You are responsible for your own success. That’s why it’s important to have friends or family members that can keep you in check. You are much more likely to stay on track if you have someone holding you accountable. They don’t need to track your progress or punish you when you’ve missed a deadline, but just having someone who is aware of your goals is helpful.

Sharing with friends the work you’re putting in to achieve your dreams is rewarding in itself. When they ask about your progress you can brag about your success or admit to some bumps in the road, but either way you’ll be motivated to continue pushing yourself!

Think big picture

As a blogger, I often get demoralized with just how many items I have on my to-do list. From writing to social media to photo editing to networking, it seriously seems like the list never ends. Focusing on the day-to-day tasks is important for getting things done, but don’t forget the big picture. For me, that hour spent editing photos for Pinterest translates to more readers which leads to a more successful travel blog which means I get to continue this crazy adventure on the road that much longer!

Focusing on the end game is much more motivating than seeing each task as an individual chore. Find a way to visualize your motivation for pursuing your work. Is your end goal to become location independent? Print out a big photo of your ideal workplace. Maybe you want to be published in the New York Times or sell your art in a gallery. Whatever it is, write it in big letters over your workspace so when you’re trudging through the day-to-day you can remind yourself what you’re really working toward.

Celebrate little milestones

Focusing on the big picture is great for motivation, but remember to celebrate successes along the way, not only when you achieve your big goal. This sounds like an easy tip to accomplish (who doesn’t love a celebration!?) but it’s something that I constantly have to remind myself of.

My partner and I set blogging goals and then consistently do not celebrate when we achieve those goals. Whenever we accomplish something, we’re right on to the next goal. It’s important to stay ambitious and continue pushing yourself, but don’t forget to pat yourself on the back when you’ve hit those little milestones.  It can be something as sharing your success with your followers on Instagram or buying a fresh bouquet of flowers for your work desk. Plan ahead which milestones you’re going to celebrate and how you’re going to treat yourself. Having small achievable goals to look forward to will keep you motivated on your journey to your big dream.

How do you find motivation when you work for yourself?

  1. Iida-Emilia says:

Great tips. For me it is actually easier to stay motivated when I am working for myself. Probably this is because I can see the big picture all the time. When I am working for someone else I only know my own tasks and actually can’t see why I am doing those things.

  2. Ashley LaMar says:

Sharing your goals w/ family and friends is a tremendous help! Having that accountability helps. When you know that other people are expecting you to accomplish something you’re more likely to do it. That’s my #1 motivator.

  3. hannah says:

I think your point about celebrating little successes is so important! I find, for myself at least, sometimes I get so caught up in my overall goal that I lose sight of my progression. Thanks for these tips! XX

  4. Kristi Beth says:

Great tips, especially for a day when I just want to stay in bed all day! I totally agree with celebrating little milestones! It makes all the work worth it and makes you realize that you are accomplishing something!

    • Christine says:

Definitely Kristi, celebrating along the way will make it easier to get to your big goal. But it can be tempting to stay in bed all day 🙂

  5. Kat Kuehl says:

Love these tips! Sometimes I struggle with maintaining structure when working for myself. I typically make a daily to do list, but your post reminded me that I shouldn’t miss the forest for the trees!

    Kat

    • Christine says:

Yes, I love that! To continue your analogy, it can be really easy to get stuck in the “weeds,” but you just gotta keep your eye on the big picture!

  6. Allison says:

Yessss! I’ve been working for myself full-time for 5 years and some times staying motivated is super tricky! (Especially when I just want to binge watch something on Netflix or porch sit with a tasty beer haha!) These are great tips. I also love creating a daily to-do list that I keep in front of my face at all times (and you’re right … some times it’s never ending!)

    • Christine says:

A daily to-do list is a great way to stay on track. Plus who doesn’t love checking things off the list! And I totally feel ya, sitting on a porch with a tasty beer is the best way to procrastinate!

  7. Olivia Adams says:

This is a really good reminder! Lately I feel like I’ve been spinning my wheels with this entire “side hustle” thing. I think another way to stay motivated is to make sure you’re working on projects that will contribute to your “big picture.” A lesson I’ve had to learn is to not take on lots of projects just because you need to pay bills ….but it’s about taking on the right projects that will pay your value and be something you enjoy. Now it’s just a matter of finding the right clients and projects!

    • Christine says:

Totally agree Olivia! Once things are start rolling it can be really tempting to say yes to everything, but like you said you have to find projects that “pay your value” not just your bills!

  8. Stacia says:

Sharing goals with friends is such a great way to motivate myself!

  9. Natalie R. says:

Thanks for that! and adding mine – Think like a marathoner, not like a sprinter (-:

  10. Pia S says:

All these tips are great! I also strongly believe in never forcing yourself toooooo hard to work; otherwise it’ll feel like a chore and chores are never fun (or successful busness-wise haha).

  11. some great tips, making goals with rewards to help you make them come true definitely works, I think!

  12. Great tips. It’s so surprising how often I read that no one celebrates their successes. Putting more celebration into our work will make it way more worth the effort!
    xx Lane

  13. Having other people hold me accountable by just telling them about my goals and plans is the most effective method for me! It also gives me that extra push when they’re genuinely interested and supportive of what I’m doing, because I always look forward to sharing with them about my progress 🙂 -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

  14. Anna Oates says:

Telling friends about goals is a great tip that I plan to use, I try to keep up with timelines myself, but it’s easy to slack. Another good way that I go about keeping myself motivated is by setting little rewards for when I finish “X”. It’s a good way to celebrate the little things along with the big!

  15. Taish says:

I first I was skeptical about sharing with friends and family. But soon figured out which ones in particular to share with.

  16. I find motivation by : working hours that I have the most energy, which is usually 5-6 am, I am not as motivated when I am tired. I also keep a end goal list, and seeing things being crossed off is super satisfying for me. Last but not least keeping a vision board on paper and on Pinterest keeps me going. I always try to remember my “WHY”.

  17. Shawn Lim says:

I find my drive through sharing my goals and dreams with other people who have similar thoughts. When we dive into the topics, we all feel motivated and that gets us going. 🙂

  18. I love the idea of sharing ideas with friends. I’ve definitely found it really gives me deadlines to adhere to rather than just a date in my calendar that only I know about (and can blow off). I also love to surround myself with likeminded people by doing meetups (not all my friends are entrepreneurs and can share the struggle) and I find that really helps me stay motivated and creative!
