Who doesn’t love a good, inspirational quote? I, myself, am borderline obsessed. Just kidding. It’s much worse than that. I’d probably marry a quote if given the opportunity. That was a weird analogy. It’s late, let’s pretend like I never said that, k? 😉 But really, I love how deep a quote can cut you, uplift you, and inspire you. Some quotes have made me feel much less alone in the world — poetic reminders that others feel the same things as I do, deep down. Others are funny, dry, and rough — yet they still sting (in a good way) because they remind us of things we’re unable to voice ourselves. Since junior high, I’ve been collecting quotes in Word documents, notebooks, and even on this blog. Today, I thought we’d keep things simple and share some of our favorites. Below, you can read some that have touched me lately. I’d also LOVE to know which ones mean something to you, too. Feel free to share them in the comments below — let’s brew some inspiration together today! Come back later to read what everyone shared and gush about the beauty of words.
+ “Nothing has transformed my life more than realizing it’s a waste of time to evaluate my worthiness by weighing the reaction of the people in the stands.” ― Brene Brown
+ “Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” ― Ira Glass
+ “You don’t have to get a job that makes others feel comfortable about what they perceive as your success. You don’t have to explain what you plan to do with your life. You don’t have to justify your education by demonstrating its financial rewards. You don’t have to maintain an impeccable credit score. Anyone who expects you to do any of those things has no sense of history or economics or science or the arts. You have to pay your own electric bill. You have to be kind. You have to give it all you got. You have to find people who love you truly and love them back with the same truth. But that’s all.” – Dear Sugar, The Rumpus
+ “Why do we wrestle with our fears? Do we all crave security, a promise from the universe that everything is good and always will be? The truth is – there is no such thing as security. Or better said, the only real security that exists is the knowledge that whatever comes, you will find the strength to deal with it.” ― Stephanie Levy
+ “The boy was beginning to understand that intuition is really a sudden immersion of the soul into the universal current of life, where the histories of all people are connected, and we are able to know everything, because it’s all written there.” ― Paulo Coelho
+ “When I was a girl, my life was music that was always getting louder. Everything moved me. A dog following a stranger. That made me feel so much.” ― Jonathan Safran Foer
+ “In a sense, it is the coming back, the return, which gives meaning to the going forth. We really don’t know where we’ve been until we come back to where we were – only where we were may not be as it was because of who we’ve become, which, after all, is why we left.”
+ “In a sense, each of us is an island. In another sense, however, we are all one. For though islands appear separate, and may even be situated at great distances from one another, they are only extrusions of the same planet, earth.” ― J. Donald Walters

p.p.s. My favorite quotes from Harry Potter.
p.p.p.s. Creative ways to display quotes.

I LOVE these quotes. And quotes in general. And if I didn’t already have a boyfriend I might try and marry quotes too, and then we’d be in competition with each other and well, that would suck. Nope, not weird! When I was 16 I painted a quote in cursive writing on each one of my walls – I totally get the love.
One of my favourite quotes?
“Life’s journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, totally worn out, shouting ‘Holy shit…what a ride!”
― Hunter S. Thompson
Ohhhh I LOVE the idea of painting a cursive quote on each of your walls. When I own my own home, I’m going to try that. 🙂 And reading the quote you shared gave me warm fuzzies. Love that!
The Ira Glass one is one of my favorites! I’ve always liked to collect quotes as well.
“Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.” Oscar Wilde
Isn’t that Ira Glass quote great? I love Oscar Wilde, too!
Love these! My favorite quote- at least for now- is one by Louisa May Alcott. “I am not afraid of storms for I am learning how to sail my ship.” It never fails to remind me there are lessons to be learned and strength to be gained from every struggle, every ounce of pain, every long day.
Love that, Elise. 🙂 Such a great reminder.
“The boy was beginning to understand that intuition is really a sudden immersion of the soul into the universal current of life, where the histories of all people are connected, and we are able to know everything, because it’s all written there.” ― Paulo Coelho
THIS x infinity. So, so beautiful.
I know, right?! That quote says everything I feel but couldn’t express — love it!
What will the world miss if you don’t tell your story.
Love that one! Thanks for sharing, Erica!
I love inspiration quotes. “Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working” by Pablo Picasso is definitely my favorite. I have that quote in the signature for my email and on my planner.
Ahhh I love that one! I think I read it recently in an article about productivity — totally clicked for me.
Great sharing! I love this quote by Nicholas Sparks, The Notebook, “Every girl is beautiful. Sometimes it just takes the right guy to see it.” It really inspiring!
Aw that’s a sweet one! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
These are all so great and relevant – thanks for sharing! My favorite (although cheesy) has been anything of Walt Whitman’s, especially “You are so much sunshine to the square inch” (I might have butchered it, but that’s the way I first heard it!)
Oh I had no idea he said that quote! How freakin’ cute. I need to write that one down. 🙂
Love this post! You know I’m a huge fan of putting quotes on notecards and post-its and leaving them in hidden spots to find later! I’ll be adding a few of these to my collection!
You are so cute. 🙂
I love the “Dear Sugar, The Rumpus” one. Really needed that today!
I have a TON of favorite inspirational quotes, too — I started using some of the shorter ones as a “Motivated Monday” tweet each week to try and start the week off strong.
If you haven’t read “Illusions” by Richard Bach, I strongly recommend it. So many of my fave quotes come from that book! It’s small – you could read it in an hour or three if you wanted to. 🙂
Ahhh I love that one too! It really feels good to read when I need it, also. I’ve never heard of Illusions, but I’m totally off to check it out right now! I LOVE books that have stellar quotes in them. 🙂
One of my favorites lately has been: “Success consists of going from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.” – Winston Churchill. It’s a good reminder that sometimes things get rough, but keep.on.moving. If you love something, stick with it.
Love that, Cornelia! Thank you for sharing.
These are some wonderful quotes! I’ve always been a quote collector, too. Brene Brown is pretty spectacular!
Glad you like ’em, Stacia! What are your favorite quotes?
My favorite quote is from Akeela and the Bee by Marianne Williamson “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
“Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, and small minds discuss people.” – Eleanor Roosevelt
This is a great daily reminder! 🙂
I’m actually super weird about inspirational quotes. I do love coming across a beautiful line, but when it gets overshared it bugs me, and I start to pick at them. Actually, sometimes I disagree with them on the spot. It’s terrible. /o
haha i’m the same way.. although, i wish i could live them out as much as i love them!!
Never underestimate the power of a friggin’ great quote, I totally agree! Realise this is an older post, yet just wanted to leave a comment for you and share one that has shaped my journey as an entrepreneur and on a personal level. “We become what we think about.”- Earl Nightingale from his infamous recording, based on his application of Think & grow rich.
Sounds a bit woo woo perhaps, yet after my business mentor recommended it I’ve listened to the audio over 50 times to date. Bit of famous personal development lineage convinced me to be open to his ‘discoveries’ from the ‘Strangest Secret’. So simple a strategy to apply to life in general and so many great quotes as a resource.
So keen to create a book filled with designs that capture the essence of these sorts of messages using the power of the quotes. A coffee table design book, peppered with designs & inspiring excerpts from this recording and others. I quite happily sit and read through a book of quotes, or lose myself in Pretty pinterest quote boards, glass of choice on hand!
‘The opposite of courage in our society, is not cowardice, its conformity’ – Earl Nigtingale
‘Whatever we plant in our subconscious mind and nourish with repetition, will one day become a reality’ – Earl Nigtingale
‘Our rewards in life will always be in direct proportion to our contribution, our service’ – Earl Nightingale
Personally, I feel as though you embody all of these Melyssa.
You provide consistently relevant and genuinely helpful information to your fellow girl boss creative entrepreneurs, so thank you!
Karen 🙂
Wow. Thank you so much for this amazing comment and for your kind words, Karen! You totally made my day with this one and I LOVE all of the quotes you shared here. Think and Grow Rich is such a classic and you reminded me that I need to go back and re-read it.
By the way, you are an awesome writer and I bet you’re an awesome designer as well. I really do believe in you and your book idea and please do keep me posted on all of your progress. Good luck, Karen! 🙂
