When I attended Alt Summit this past June, I knew I wanted to spice up my previously plain business cards. After doing a massive search for business card ideas, I knew that something simple was definitely more “me.” I didn’t include many fancy graphics or images on my cards — instead, I invested in thick paper and spiced things up by edge painting the sides of my business cards. Today I’ve got a quick tutorial so that you can do the same!

Supplies: Perhaps the most important ingredient is the thickness of your business cards. The thicker the better! I decided to go with Moo’s Luxe line and was really pleased with the cards I received! You will also need a clamp (I used this one), some paint, and a sponge brush.

When I was researching business cards, I found that if I got them professionally edge painted, it would be around $100 extra. To purchase all the supplies above (not including the business cards), it was less than $10! 🙂

DIY Edge Painted Business Cards

Step 1

Get a stack of cards together and make sure the edges are all lined up as evenly as possible. Clamp them together as tight as you can! Keep in mind that you’ll ruin the top and bottom cards, but you can always reuse them each time you edge paint, so you don’t waste too many cards. Tip: I’ve seen tutorials suggesting that you could use heavy books to squish the cards together, but honestly, I thought the clamp was pretty vital! It was only six bucks and very worth it in my opinion.

Step 2

Using the sponge brush, gently paint your cards. Even though they were clamped, I found it useful to push them together in the area I was painting, just to make sure no paint would leak through.

Step 3

Give your cards a few minutes to dry, then un-clamp them and separate them with your fingers. Tip: The cards might stick together a bit. Instead of separating them one by one, try breaking the deck in half, and then continuing to break it into halves until all the cards are separated. It’s quick, I promise! I found that separating them one by one pulled too much on the individual card and caused some of them to fray. It works a lot better if you separate them into big chunks first and then gradually get smaller. Hopefully that makes sense. 🙂

Voila! All finished! I was really happy with the results and lots of people commented on the uniqueness of the cards. If you’re like me and enjoy simple, modern designs, then edge painting your business cards is an easy way to add a little somethin’ somethin’ that helps people remember you and your blog or business. One final note: I bought a few shades of pink paint prior to painting my cards, because I wanted to make sure the color matched my branding. I encourage you to find a color that matches your blog or business’ brand, too! It will help people remember you and will give you a consistent look.

Branding question! What color would you edge paint your business cards?

    Hi Mel:
    This is a great DIY!
The colored edges are a cute final touch. I think I’m going to try this into my business cards, just need to buy the clamp 😛
Thank you so much, have a nice day ♥.

  3. thealishanicole says:

I love this idea!! I would deg paint my edges hot pink!

  4. Kenzie Smith says:

What a cute idea! I would probably go with a pink color or maybe gold..

  5. Very cool! I really like the thickness, and the simplicity is wonderful. ♥

  6. Amy Amynmore says:

    That’s a really lovely idea. 🙂

  7. Jasmine says:

This is awesome! I love it. I can’t wait to create new business cards now.

  8. Gorgeous! I’m going to have to try this. Thank you!

  9. Cassandre says:

such a cute and chic idea. I would definitely do a turquoise blue

  10. Shannon says:

What a great idea. I have just been thinking about business cards. I was networking in person yesterday and thought it would have been great to have something to give them instead of just telling them about my blog.

  11. Gina Alyse says:

Awesome tutorial, Melyssa!! I love out it adds a little flair to the cards and doing it by hand looks so easy! I would go for a teal blue if I did it myself. Great post! 🙂

  12. esther julee says:

Turquoise! I was wondering when you were going to do a tutorial on this! 🙂

  13. Amanda says:

    So pretty! Love this. 🙂

  14. Journeysof TheZoo says:

  15. Stacia says:

I would paint mine the same color as my blog header (which is a unique tealish, bluish, greenish that I have yet to determine what to call.) I love the idea of painting the edges of my business cards. As I look into ordering new ones, this is on my list of possible things to do with them. 🙂

  16. I would paint mine sky blue or black!

  17. Noor Unnahar says:

Awesome idea Melyssa. I would love to have a light pink shade. I will make some business cards once I start college , it will be so pro 🙂

  18. Such a lovely idea! 🙂 I would have never thought of this. May have to give it a go when I get some more cards. ♥ I think mine would have to be red or pink. I love the colour you chose.

  19. Fran says:

that’s an awesome idea – soo much cheaper than having them made like that!

  20. This is so cute! I don’t have any business cards yet, but when I get some, I definitely want to try this out with some gold paint!

  21. Love this idea. I would have painted them blue I think.

  22. Elise Epp says:

Thanks! I think this is the most “I can do that!” tutorial I’ve seen for business card edges. Gonna try soon…

  23. Sam Thatte says:

I am thinking of doing this, but I am a bit concerned. Can acrylic paint run if it gets wet in a client’s pocket? I can just imagine a client getting upset because they put my card in their shirt pocket and it accidentally got wet and stained the shirt!

  24. Guest says:

Just finished my second batch. Thanks for the tutorial 😀

  25. Oubly says:

Fabulous post. If anyone is considering an alternative solution to the DIY approach our company prints business cards on 36 pt. thick eco-friendly paper and we edge paint as well. Currently we have 9 colors to choose from. You can view the following page for more information: http://www.oubly.com/premium-business-cards

  26. minniemork says:

thank you so much for this! this saved me 100 bucks! 😀 I was wondering what font you used in “nectar” or did you handwrite that? I love it!

  27. Rae says:

I’ve used Moo before, too, and I was very pleased with what I received. Their quality of print and cardstock is great- they definitely help you leave a good, professional impression.

I never thought about painting the edges, but I LOVE the idea.

    Thanks a bunch!

  28. Shannelle C says:

This is such a helpful suggestion! Moo’s great, but the additional cost is something consider, and this technique has me so interested to test it out!

  29. Amanda S says:

I was just thinking about ordering new business cards..until I saw this!! Will definetly be trying.

  30. Karen Rae Walker says:

This is an awesome idea!! Thanks Melyssa!!

  31. Olga Olegovna says:

When I created visiting card (I use Juicybc) I chose yellow paper but I wanted blue edges. I’ve made amazing card thx to your topic

  32. Anshad says:

Hi … Awsom tutorial ..i would like to do it on my bussiness card..could u please suggest me wich paint should i buy ?
    Thanking u

  33. Rosella E. LaFevre says:

I think I’d paint two edges peach and two edges blue!

  34. Tracey--My Best Self says:

Mine would be a baby or ocean blue. I love this idea!

  35. Jenna Meow says:

I absolutely love this idea! This is motivating me to get business cards printed asap.

  36. Kimi Who? says:

Why am I not surprised to find you wrote all about this!? Found your post because I’m looking for a company that provides custom colors for business card edges. I’m terrified to paint them myself – I am the worst at DIY. 😀

I watched a tutorial where the guy used clamps and 2 pieces of wood on either side. He used an acrylic spray paint and I feel like it was too messy. 🙁 This seems smarter to me – a lot more control over the paint!

  37. Charlotte says:

I’m wracking my brain but I would probably go for a navy, grey or black, which is super boring but very in tune with what I do. My photography business though would be a beautiful mid toned, grey tinted blue, which would look gorgeous. Such a pretty colour.

  38. Laura Cotterman says:

I may of missed it but what did you have on the other side?? Love the creativity!
