Hey friends! At the beginning of each month, I share in-depth look at my blogging and business goals for the month ahead. I find that crafting goals at the start of the month is a great way to align my work with the intentions that matter to me most. It’s also a way to keep me focused and dreaming big. Not to mention, sharing these goals for everyone to see makes me even more motivated to complete them. 😉 Today, I’m sharing how I did in August, as well as some big goals I’m striving toward this September.

I lit-rally (Chris Traeger voice) can’t believe that August was only…one month long. For as long as it felt, you could’ve tricked me into thinking it was three. I don’t really mean that in a bad way though. It felt long — not because it was bad by any means — but because SO MUCH happened. The biggest being that I officially stopped taking one-on-one clients and also launched my first e-course, Pinfinite Growth. I’m working on a crazy in-depth post (and maybe a workshop — you down?) about the launch of my course, so stay tuned for that!
Now, let’s dive into my goals — how I did in August and what I’m working on this September.
How I did on my August goals:
1. Host a mini series on Periscope.
Yup, yup! Early on in August, I hosted a daily Periscope series, #BeFound, which shared different strategies to stand out online and be found by more of the right people. The series lasted for five days and I got a really positive response from the people who attended. Woo!
…It was also the last time I used Periscope! I used to use Periscope pretty frequently — at least every couple days. But after that series, the launch of my e-course started and I pretty much fell off the face of the earth. Ha! I definitely do want to get back into using Periscope though, now that the launch (aka my to do list) has settled down. I think Periscope is SO worth using, but also a lot of work. I don’t really like listening to random babbling on Periscope, so I tend to plan out each Periscope’s content ahead of time to make sure I’m providing valuable content to my followers and staying on track with specific points. In some cases it can be almost as much work as crafting a new blog post (not to mention, my Periscopes tend to last 30-60 minutes), so it can definitely take up a lot of time.
Anyways, I’m really happy with how the #BeFound series went on Periscope and I plan to get back into it sometime soon.
2. Launch my new e-course
Holy cow…yes! I’ve been wanting to release an e-course for over a year, but with running my full-time design business and this blog, it just wasn’t happenin’. I honestly am glad that I decided to stop taking clients in order to create and launch the course. It was a little nerve-wracking not knowing if I’d bring in much revenue from Pinfinite Growth, but August ended up being my most profitable month (ever!), which gives me so much hope for this new business model. It was also one of the most FUN months and I truly enjoyed seeing people interact with the course material.
It’s also been exciting for me to hear from some students who are already seeing massive results…only one week after the course officially started. One member of our Facebook group shared this image yesterday, which totally elated me:

She also said, “So I’m on the final module and I’m starting to look at my stats. I’ve looked at them before, but when I opened them this morning while watching the module, I almost started to cry. LOOK AT THAT SPIKE!”
Another student said, “Just gotta say… I spent nearly the whole day yesterday listening to the first four modules and working on my boards, and I woke up with 55 more followers! I have a small account so that’s a HUGE deal for me. Just wanted to share a little win & some thanks to this group for the inspiration!”
Launching the course was one of the most intense things I’ve done as a business owner, but it was even more nerve wracking to deliver it to the students, wondering if they’d actually find the material useful. It’s humbling and exciting to see that people really do dig it, and that it’s helping them grow their tribes. So rad. You can learn more about it here, if you’re interested.
3. Host my first webinar
I sure did! Funny story? I was up late the night before my webinar, trying to simultaneously figure out the tech components, polish up my slides, and get some practice in. When I woke up the next morning, I felt horrible. The only thing I can compare it to is a bad hangover. I don’t think my body is used to that much abuse (and caffeine)! I made a smoothie for breakfast and then promptly threw it up, less than an hour before my webinar was set to air. I honestly contemplated just throwing in the towel and telling everyone, “I’m sorry, the webinar will not be happening today as planned because Melyssa is dead.”
Luckily, the moment the class began, I got my mojo back. There is nothing that can cure a business hangover faster than speaking to hundreds of your people at once. 🙂 Over 1,000 people ended up watching the live class and recording, and I got more emails and tweets than I could count, from people who thoroughly enjoyed it. That webinar was one of my favorite biz moments so far and I can’t wait to do more of them. Psst I’m announcing my next one soon! Make sure you sign up here so you find out about it. 🙂
4. Take new photos/headshots for my website
Working on it! I did book a photographer, so hopefully by the end of September, I’ll have some more professional photos to share with you. 🙂
5. Host an “international” #NectarChat.
Crap! Craaaaaap. This one didn’t happen, likely because most of my non-ecourse-related goals fell by the wayside. SEPTEMBER. It’s happening, y’all.
Sidenote: When I hosted my first webinar, I asked people to share where they were tuning in from and SO many people lived in European and other non-US countries. I *love* the international TNC crowd, so it was a reminder that I need to take care of my peeps, no matter where they live.
6. Start implementing The Miracle Morning.
I finished reading The Miracle Morning — which is a book about how to create a morning routine that breeds a more intentional and productive day — but haven’t added it to my day yet. I need to get on this! Everyone I talk to who has done it says it’s life changing.
7. Work on my relationships more.
Well, there’s still work to be done (always, right?), but I did make more of an effort to be a good partner to my boyfriend, Paul, and a good friend to the people in my life. This needs to be a daily goal.
Also? A little thing that helped me, as ridiculous as it sounds, was turning on the “read receipts” on my iPhone. “Read receipts” basically show people when you have actually opened their text messages. I have a bad habit of reading text messages, responding in my head, and then forgetting to actually respond for like, a week. Horrible! Turning on the “read receipts” was a way to hold myself accountable. If I ever exited out of a text without responding, I was immediately reminded that my friend could see that I just unintentionally ignored them, and I promptly texted them back. I feel a little embarrassed admitting that, but it really has helped me.
My Goals for September 2015:
1. Plan out the rest of my year.
I’m really enjoying the freedom and imagination involved in creating digital products, but I also want to make sure that I’m intentional about the things I create. I’d love to spend a day planning out the rest of 2015 — including blog post ideas, product offerings, Periscope topics, newsletters, etc. Idea-making and planning has always been a favorite of mine, so I’m really looking forward to this.
2. Travel to Seattle.
This one isn’t business related, but Paul and I will be traveling to Seattle for a few days this month and I’m actually pretty excited to not feel pressured to work on my business during that time. There’s also a rainforest not far from Seattle?!?! So stoked about that. Though, I had a dream recently that an angry bear was chasing me, which was kind of terrifying. Sometimes my imagination is a real jerk, man.
3. Hire an assistant
This has been on my mind for awhile. I know I could really use one, but it’s hard for me to come to terms with the expense for some reason, even when it’s in my budget. Deep down, I know that I’m doing a disservice to my business by not outsourcing some of the things I do. The funny thing is, I’m probably making less money by not having an assistant because it means I spend a lot of time doing little tasks instead of big picture planning and creating.
Any online assistants you particularly love?
4. Get back into a healthy diet.
I really believe that a healthy lifestyle affects every other aspect of your life, including your business. For awhile I was a health NUT. My meals were basically paleo: organic, gluten-free, non-GMO, and dairy-free, with minimal sugar. All of a sudden, my health goals have completely fallen by the wayside. The tough thing for me is how long cooking takes in general. I love cooking, but it can become pretty time consuming. I tried meal prepping and will probably do it again, but got pretty sick of eating similar things everyday. I think what I really need are just some new ideas of healthy and quick things I can make/eat. I keep cycling through the same types of recipes.
On the plus side, I had a kale salad for breakfast. So, progress, or something. 😉
5. Launch an e-book and at least one workshop.
At the moment, I’m working on an ebook and some workshops. Once I nail down my schedule for the rest of the year, I’ll have a better idea of what will come next. I have too many ideas swimming around, which is both exciting and overwhelming.
6. Add more of a community to TNC.
I’ve got some ideas for this. One being, simply, to create a Facebook group for all our hustlers. After seeing people interact in Pinfinite Growth’s private Facebook group, I’m really looking forward to this. Community is everything to me.
7. Form a mastermind group.
Lastly, I’d like to form a mastermind group that meets consistently each week. I was part of a mastermind before, but it has pretty much dissolved, so I’m planning to form a new one. 🙂
Mastermind groups are basically small groups (3-4) of people in similar levels of business and usually with an understanding of each other’s industries. Typically, they meet either weekly or biweekly and each member can share what they’re working on and any ideas they have in order to get feedback. They’re also just a fun way to connect with other business owners who “get it.” 🙂

Congrats again on your ecourse success! That’s so awesome that you went with your (scary) goal and are now reaping the benefits.
I’m a huge fan of MM (I talked about it here http://www.jenncoyle.net/blog/my-miracle-morning) and I find the best thing is making it your own. I currently only journal every morning but it’s been an awesome transformation since I started doing it consistently… I think it vastly helped me write my book!
And about the mastermind group- I’d love to be involved.
Thank you so much, Jenn! I’m thankful the ecourse launch turned out well, too. 🙂 So rad that you follow the MM, too! I’m excited to check out that post. 🙂
Awesome work! I love reading your monthly goals and how you go sticking to them – it’s really interesting to see your progress! One of my goals is to implement a monthly goal sharing post on my blog too, mainly to keep me accountable… too many of my goals just exist in my head, I need to get them out into the world!
Thanks Phoebe! And that’s awesome. I think you’ll definitely enjoy the practice of writing down your goals each month. It can be really insightful.
You will love Seattle! I visited unfortunately only for a day but I definitely plan to go back. Some of my goals are similar! How has it been launching your first course? Would love to hear more about how it went for you! Oh and your first webinar! Were you nervous at all?
Yay! I’m super excited for Seattle. 🙂
And I’m working on a post about the launch — so much to share! It was a LOT of work — like more than I was expecting, but I’m happy with how it turned out and it was also pretty exciting. The webinar can pretty much be described in the same way, ha! I wasn’t too nervous, maybe because at the time I was Periscoping pretty frequently, which helped me feel more comfortable on camera. But the webinar was a lot of fun and totally solidified how much I like teaching.
I love it that you put your goals out there! It makes them real! Great Post… We have many goal similarities! Looking forward to seeing your growth. I can see all the effort you put into your goals, you should get there in no time. 🙂
Thank you so much! You are too sweet.
My goal is to start working on an ebook also. Just have yet to find a good topic. Hope your have fun in Seattle. Make sure to upload lots of photos
Thank you so much! I’ll definitely share some pictures on Instagram. Good luck with your ebook. 🙂
Congrats on launching Pinfinite Growth! I have just launched my website today and seriously couldn’t have done it without you and your content! I used your site as my bible and when there wasn’t an answer on Nectar Collective(which wasn’t often), I was able to find it on one of your pinterest board! So thank you again and again and forever! Your resources, ebooks, content and reports are so helpful and you have taught me so much!
Kindest, Kay x

Wow, Kayla, this is such an awesome comment. Your blog is looking absolutely fantastic, I can’t believe you just launched. Congrats on such a stand out debut. 🙂 If there are ever in questions you wish I’d answered here on the blog, or things you’d like to know more about, I’d love to hear ’em! Always on the hunt for content that will be useful to my peeps. 🙂
I always jump with excitement when I see a new TNC post in my feed. They’re always butt-kicking in the best way. Love reading about your goals! Your months do seem to be longer than everyone else’s. You get so much done! By the way, I’d love to be your assistant 😉
Oh Hanna, this comment is just the sweetest. Thank you for all that encouragement. 🙂 I may have found an assistant already, but I’ll keep you posted. Thank you for the offer! 🙂
I’m in desperate need of a mastermind group, too. Definitely on the list for September.
What an awesome month, thanks for sharing! I find these posts super motivating. I have a lot of goals for September, but I’m confident I can kill them: create a 7-day reset ebook for purchase with new recipes and photographs, launch my first Periscope mini-series on stress (starting this Monday!!), take a bunch of stock photographs for my blog and updating all of my old visuals, growing my social media channels – I’m focusing on Pinterest!, getting my health back on track after an indulgent summer, and hopefully putting on a workshop at my local gym (in the works.) I’ve also started sending out weekly newsletters instead of monthly ones – just quickies that are straight-to-the-point and focus on offering new value rather than regurgitation. I’m also set on selling at least 1 corporate workshop. I’m really excited!
Sarah, you are ROCKIN’ at life right now. I love all of this stuff. These are the kinds of things that get me all hot and bothered, haha! So excited to hear about all the rad stuff you’re doing. Get it!
Haha, likewise. 🙂 Thanks so much, Mel.
I love these goals! If you’re looking for some healthy eating inspo, I’d love to send you an Inspiralizer and get you Inspiralized 🙂 E-mail me if you’re interested! Love this post.
It is such a great idea to publish your goals. It is a great kick in the butt to get going. For September, I am going to launch my first ecourse – I’m excited. Just have to put the finishing touches on it. In addition, I am going to co-host my first creative challenge.
It definitely helps keep me accountable, Katy. 🙂
Congrats to you on what sounds like a phenomenal September! What’s your ecourse about?
It’s a guided ecourse for how to learn anything.
So many great goals! Pinfinite Growth is AMAZING and the community you’ve formed in Facebook just for this class is great! You’re killing it! September is basically my month of planning out the rest of the fall and working hard on a huge event I have coming up in October. I keep looking at my list of goals and thinking “man, that’s small” but then I remember how many little items are involved in each goal and I’m like, “no, I’m good.” haha
Stacia, thank you so much for saying that. I’m so glad you’re liking the course and Facebook group. It’s been really awesome for me to see the FB group blossom, too — so many talented, positive people in there. We’re fortunate to have your wisdom, too. 🙂
And haha! Your last comment made me laugh out loud. So true.
Love it!
Great goals – I used to be in a mastermind and it was really helpful, but due to lots of reasons we not longer meet. You’ve prompted me to look for (or start!) a new one. Also, loving Pinfinite growith. 🙂
That’s awesome Megan! They can be really helpful, right?
And I’m so glad you’re enjoying the course. 🙂
okay okay. you convinced me. I’m all signed up for the course. Most excited about learning to create on-brand images. My goals for this month are to post consistently each week and to figure out a routine that works with school and family.
You’re so awesome, Marina. Very excited to have you in the course! Posting consistently and figuring out a routine are such important things. I’m working on the routine bit myself — I know that once I fix my current routine, it will help my productivity so much.
Love these posts Melyssa! I think posting goals is a great way to hold yourself accountable! I also love your read receipt trick… although I don’t know if I’m quite ready to turn mine on myself. 😉 Happy September! <3
Thank you Jamie! Haha I definitely had to test myself by turning those read receipts on! 😉 So far, so good.
I have been out of school for a about a year and a half now, but September still says to me “now is the time to get serious.” August signaled the end of summer and playing around, but now is the time start learning, setting and completing goals. Here’s to completing all those wish-lists and gotta-dos for the next month!
Don’t you just love that? I feel similarly about September, it just always feels like a “new beginning” kind of month. 🙂
Hi Melyssa,
Great post! I’m not a full-time online assistant, but I offer virtual services and a retainer rate for blog and e-course editing.
I’d love to hear what you need and work with you! You’ve been on my list to email later in the month, but since you mention it 🙂 I can provide a portfolio and references, and would love to chat further if you’re interested!
Best,
Sarah (selaurence@gmail.com)
Sarah, you’re so sweet for reaching out. Thank you! I think I’ve found a new assistant (someone I already work with from time to time), but I’ll keep you posted if anything changes. 🙂
Melyssaaa, you are such an inspiring blog babe!! Please keep me updated on the international #NectarChat, I’d LOVE to be part of it as I’m one of those international followers. Maybe you can drop us an email or something to remind us of that, and oh, the Periscope series too! I don’t wanna miss a thing. 🙂 Happy September!
xx, Roxanne

(P.s. you have two “1.”s in the August goals section of this post… Whoops.)
Roxanne, thank you for this truly awesome comment. Or should I say, magical comment? Yes, magical comment. 🙂
Because of your sweet comment, I’m going to plan out the International #NectarChat right now. I can’t wait!
And thank you for letting me know that I put two 1s! All fixed now. I swear, I proofread all of my posts several times, but there is always one mistake hiding from me. 😉 I love when people point it out, perhaps because I am a sucker for grammar and spelling. 😀 Thank you!
These are all SO inspirational. I love reading these every month because you’re so kick-ass and get SO much done! Even if you don’t check off everything on your list, you inspire me to get out there and do stuff. I really want to check out your Pinfinite growth class now. Stay stellar!
xx, Pia

You’re so sweet, Pia. Sometimes it honestly feels like I’m getting nothing done, ha! So I really appreciate you saying that. It definitely motivates me. 🙂
I am currently doing this – writing down all my goals for the month ahead and putting it around the house where I can see it so that I can continuously be reminded of it! Thanks for sharing your goals with us!
http://glamorousglitter.co.za/how-to-optimise-your-blog-images-for-seo-blogging-resources/
Such a cool idea to put your goals around the house! I REALLY like that! May just have to try it. 🙂
Aw an international nectarchat would be awesome! I’m in Europe and can never participate due to time difference x
Hopefully we can change that soon and you can join in on #nectarchat, Camila! 🙂
If you’re open to it, there are plenty of people who would assist you in exchange for coaching or being in your course. Just make sure they’re familiar with blogging/business. My assistant is an amazing copywriter that wanted access to me and my course.
Great tip, Maya! That is so awesome that you were able to work that out with your assistant, win-win for both!
Thanks for the anonymous shout-out! (I’m the one that got 55 followers overnight!). <3 I honestly want to thank you for this e-course. One of my friends referred me to the course and I knew Pinterest was something I needed to work on, but I wasn't sure how. I've loved connecting with the group on Facebook and seeing others' wins as inspiration. I'm currently coming up with ideas for a HUGE rebranding and have been scouring your site for guidance/ideas. SO happy I found you & your course!
AH! Lauren, you have no idea how happy this makes me! I’m so glad you’ve found PG so beneficial. You are a rockstar!
Hello!
Did you end up making the mastermind group? I am at the start of creating my own business and would loooove to be part of a group. Any advice?
Thank you!
Hi Mikaela! I never did form a mastermind of my own but I have joined one and highly recommend joining or forming one yourself! Feel free to use the collaboration thread in the Blog + Biz BFFs Facebook group to link up with some likeminded people 🙂
