Boyhood

On Friday night, Paul and I went to see the movie Boyhood, and I couldn’t wait to share my thoughts with you all. The movie is a reflection on life, family, and growing up that was shot over 12 years, using the same actors. The fact that the actors remain the same — many of whom start out as children and end as adults — pulls you remarkably close to the film and to the characters’ experiences. Paul and I talked about it the whole way home, agreeing it was one of our new favorite movies. With a 99% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, we’re not the only ones who think so.

The movie is a slice of life, without feeling trite or scripted. Watching Boyhood feels more like a home movie of a friend’s life than a cinematic blockbuster. Its beauty is in its simplicity and relatability. According to Slate’s Dana Stevens, “[Boyhood is] as transcendent as it is ordinary—just like life.” I can’t recommend this beautiful film enough. I really hope you’ll see it. 🙂
