A picture speaks a 1000 words. Oh yes! With popular social media platforms like Instagram, Pinterest and Bloglovin’, there is a huge focus on creating visual content that is catchy and attractive. Whether you are blogging for hobby or business, creating beautiful visuals will always help your blog stand out amongst the big sea of other blogs.
If you want to step it up a notch by taking your own photos for the blog, here is a list of the photography equipment I use and love. If you fear the expense of photography equipment, then I think your budget will find some awesome suggestions in this post, too — starting at $8!
1. Camera – Canon EOS 600D – $500
I might have had 1,000 (okay, maybe more like 100) people recommend this camera to me, and after using it for a year now, I can’t recommend it enough myself. It is a fantastic entry level DSLR, perfect for bloggers. It takes excellent quality pictures and gives a great bang for your buck!
2. Lens – Canon 50mm f1.8 – $115
For under $100, this lens does an incredible job at taking sharp, crisp photos for my blog. It has an f-stop of 1.8, meaning it gives a great depth of field (i.e it can add a blurred background effect to your photos, leaving the subject crisp and focused). You can always use the kit lens that comes with your camera, but I think you’ll find that getting a different lens will transform your photos. If you purchase just one lens, let it be this one.
3. Diffuser & Reflector kit – $18
Direct sunlight can cause strong shadows in your photos, and a diffuser can be really helpful to diffuse the harsh sunlight into soft light.
On the other hand, on those dull, cloudy days, a reflector is very useful for adding more light into your blog photos. This $20 reflector kit is all you need to achieve the perfect lighting for blog-worthy images.
4. AmazonBasics tripod – $23 + Remote – $8
If you often need to take pictures of yourself for your blog, this remote will be your best friend. Just set up the camera on a tripod, pose in front of it and click away with the remote. A photoshoot you can do single-handedly? Think of the possibilities! The Amazon basics remote is under $10 and their tripod is pretty affordable, too — a great one to start off with.
5. Artificial lighting kit – $55
Natural lighting is the best for shooting blog photos. But if you work a full-time job and can’t catch any natural daylight, you can get this artificial umbrella lighting kit to mimic the natural daylight for your photos. It’s pretty nifty and crazy good for affordable it is.

Amanda
http://www.blissfulgal.com
Of course, there are plenty! Will write a post about it soon 🙂 But definitely try GIMP & Paint.NET – they are both amazing Amanda! 🙂
I found the remote and tripod made a world of difference especially when taking pictures in low or not the best light. I’ll have to look into the diffuser though! Thanks for the tips
Great to hear that Ursula 🙂 Yes diffuser would be great for those direct sunlight days! xx
I have the SAME tripod and it is great for the money! And your camera recommendation – wish I would known when I bought my camera! I really could use the flip around screen but its too late now. I won’t be upgrading again until I buy a full frame camera.
Hi Morgan, yup the flip screen is a great advantage! Yuo you can get a better one later xx
I really need to buy the 50MM lens, I have a few of the other things mentions but I keep reading about the lens!
Oh yes Bri, it is such a steal at 100$ xx

Lighting has been my nemesis! So glad you listed a cheap option for lighting so that I can get my pictures where I need them to be!
Oh yes lighting can be really tricky at times, hope you find this equipment useful Rachel! xx
I highly recommend an external flash like the Neewer TT560 Flash Speedlite. Its great for capturing super-bright photos and portraits by smoothing out imperfections to get that perfect high fashion look.

🙂 Ha ha, the 50mm is a great one Jacqui! x
Will ask for this Canon for my birthday. Until then, my iphon is better than my old camera (-:
Hi Natalie, Ah the iphone can take super quality photos. In fact I ve many times not been able to tell the difference between iphone and dslr photos x
Yes, I totally agree. I had one year with some other android phone, and went back to using iphon just for the camera. Even when it means coming back to itunes /-:
I can’t say enough good things about my canon 700D, it’s the best thing I’ve purchase this past year!
xx
Ana Leote | Meet Me @ 2 am
Hi Ana 🙂 I can imagine, the canon rebel series is really amazing xx
Ooh, thanks for the tip on the reflector and diffusor, I dont get a lot of light in my house so I find it hard to get bright photos. I have all the other stuff already but need to upgrade from 500D to a 600D as the flip out screen is helpful when shooting to-camera videos! Thankfully you can get them on Ebay for around £300. I had this lens you recommend but unfortunately dropped it twice in a row and it broke, have had to use my kit lens and it SUCKS!
If you are upgrading consider 750D, I have heard great things about that one too! 🙂 And about the lens 🙁 That is terrible, yes it is a very sensitive lens though! xx
Thankfully it’s an affordable lens! 🙂
I just bought a 50mm for my camera and can’t wait to get to using it!
Hi stacia, I really hope you love it as much as i do! xx
Thank thank THANK YOU! This posts is exactly what i’ve been searching for! (That and how to take better photos for your blog) It is definitely one of my weaknesses.
Im currently in the process of rebranding and designing a new website so flawless photos are a must! 🙂

I’ve been looking for a cheap, artificial lighting set for winter. Thanks for the link! I’ll definitely look into this one.
Great! This is what I need. Do you think this camera is also good for graphic designers?

Chaitra – have you ever used an extension arm for your tripod? I do a lot of DIY posts and so I’m finding myself doing a lot more overhead process/ingredient photos. I do not have a steady hand so I’m totally reliant on my tripod, but it doesn’t work well for lay flat/aerial shots so I’m thinking of picking up an extension arm, but I’m not sure where to start. Just wondering if you have any experience/advice in this area! 🙂
Thanks for the tripod recommendation! I have been trying to prop my camera up on boxes for awhile now. I love how affordable your suggestion was. I am visiting family right now and flying home in a week, is this tripod pretty portable? Or should I wait to order until I am back home?

Oh my god Chaitra!! haha I come to the nectar collective and find you! You have no idea how happy that has made me feel. You’re AMAZING!!

Woohoo! Glad this was helpful to you, Miranda! 🙂

Hey Sahra! Yes a remote is a game changer 🙂
Ha! My Canon remote is currently on its way to me from Amazon! A brilliant little addition!
Excellent choice of affordable equipment! Your photos are beautiful.
One of my
favorite pieces of photography equipment is my Nikon SB700 speed flash
and my Gary Fong Diffuser. I mainly use the equipment for photographing
events, but I plan to start using it for blogging. For portraits in natural lighting I enjoy using my little reflector I got from amazon.

I recently did a collection of my own favorite photography equipment for travel and a lot of mine are similar to yours. I always just use natural lighting but I’m dying to try out a reflector kit. Thanks for sharing!
